Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (性病s) are infections spread from one person to another by sexual contact. 它是 necessary that people who are sexually active get checked often to make sure that they have not contracted a disease that can harm their body in the long run. Although a lot of these sexually transmitted diseases have cures, most times symptoms are nonexistent making the risk of spreading to another person even greater. If you or someone you know is dealing with this issue, contact your health care provider or the free student health center. Information on each type of sexually transmitted disease is provided below.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the most common 性病s. It can infect both men and women, and even affect a woman's reproductive system in the future if not treated properly. 它是 spread by any sexual contact (i.e. vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has chlamydia).

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea can infect both men and women. It can cause infections in the genitals, rectum, and throat. 它是 a very common infection, especially among young people ages 15-24 years. 它是 spread by any sexual contact (i.e. vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has gonorrhea).

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is an 性病 caused by two types of viruses and is very common in the United States. The viruses are called herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). 口服 herpes is usually caused by HSV-1 and can result in cold sores or fever blisters on or around the mouth. However, most people do not have any symptoms. 口服 herpes caused by HSV-1 can be spread from non-sexual contact with saliva and also from the mouth to the genitals through oral sex. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

HIV is a disease that can make a person very sick and even cause death. It can be spread by sexual contact, sharing needles to inject drugs, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding. 它是 important to take the proper precautions to stop the spread of HIV by taking to your doctor, using condoms, and getting tested frequently. Below is a brief overview of 性病 testing recommendations. 性病 screening information for healthcare providers can be found 在这里.

All adults and adolescents from ages 13 to 64 should be tested at least once for HIV.
All sexually active women younger than 25 years should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year. 女性 25 years and older with risk factors such as new or multiple sex 合作伙伴s or a sex 合作伙伴 who has an 性病 should also be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year.
All pregnant women should be tested for syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B starting early in pregnancy. At-risk pregnant women should also be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea starting early in pregnancy. Testing should be repeated as needed to protect the health of mothers and their infants.
All sexually active gay and bisexual men should be tested at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. 那些 who have multiple or anonymous 合作伙伴s should be tested more frequently for 性病s (i.e., at 3- to 6-month intervals).
Sexually active gay and bisexual men may benefit from more frequent HIV testing (e.g., every 3 to 6 months).
Anyone who has unsafe sex or shares injection drug equipment should get tested for HIV at least once a year.

always require an invasive genital swab. Comprehensive 性病 screening can be completed with a urine sample and a blood sample.

can diagnose and treat sexually transmitted infections.

Q: Does the student health center have free condoms?

A: The only way to ensure you don't contract an 性病 is by not having vaginal, anal, or oral sex. If you are sexually active, it is important you use condoms correctly each time you have sex, and make sure you and your 合作伙伴 get tested frequently.

A: Everyone should start seeing their provider as soon as they become sexually active.

What about birth control and 性病s?

Make sure your adolescent knows that even if they are using another type of birth control, they should use a condom every time they have sex. This reduces the risk for HIV and most other 性病s. Birth control such as the IUD, implant, pill, patch, ring, or shot provides effective pregnancy prevention, but it does not protect against HIV and other 性病s. Condoms can reduce the risk to both 合作伙伴s for most 性病s, including HIV, as well as the risk for pregnancy.Getting tested for 性病s is also important.

How should you choose a birth control method?

Information from healthcare providers can help you decide which birth control method is right for you. 它是 important to consider:

How well does it work? 一些 birth control methods are more effective at preventing pregnancy than others. IUDs and implants are the most effective reversible methods currently available.
Is it easy to use? 一些 methods are easier to use than others. For example, if it is hard to remember to take a pill every day, birth control pills may not be the best option.
What are the possible side effects? A healthcare provider can explain potential side effects of methods and ensure that a method is safe given a person's overall health.
Does it prevent 性病s? Most contraceptive methods do not prevent 性病s, so it is recommended that adolescents also always use condoms in addition to their primary birth control method for both 性病 and pregnancy prevention.
How much does it cost? Most insurance plans, including Medicaid, fully cover most birth control methods. For those without health insurance, some clinics provide free or low cost options.
